HIBC Code & HIBC Label - Explanation, benefits and use in medical fulfillment
What is an HIBC code?
The HIBC Code (Health Industry Bar Code) is an internationally standardized identification system for medical products. It was developed by the Health Industry Business Communications Council (HIBCC) to enable clear, secure and machine-readable identification of medical products along the entire supply chain.
HIBC codes are mainly used in the following areas:
- Clinics and hospitals
- Medical wholesalers
- Manufacturer of medical devices
- Logistics and fulfillment service provider
The code is used to uniquely identify products, ensure traceability and automate processes such as storage, picking and shipping.
How is an HIBC code structured?
An HIBC code consists of two parts:
1. primary data structure
It contains the most important product information:
- Manufacturer identification number (LIC – Labeler Identification Code)
- Item number / Product number
- Packaging level
- Check digit
Example: +A123B456C
The leading “+” indicates the HIBC standard.
2. secondary data structure
Variable data is coded here, e.g:
- Batch number
- Serial number
- Expiry date
- Production date
- Quantity
Example: /240101LOT12345
Both parts can be displayed in Code 39, DataMatrix or QR code formats.
Why are HIBC labels so important in the medical industry?
Medical devices are subject to strict legal requirements.
Support HIBC labels:
- Traceability (UDI conformity)
- Patient safety
- Error-free identification in everyday clinical practice
- Automated storage and shipping processes
- Fast and secure documentation
For logistics and fulfillment, HIBC codes are a key component for moving medical products efficiently and safely.
